After we had been in France for a month, we decided it was time to rent a car so we could adventure out and explore the surroundings of our host country.
It is difficult to find a vehicle big enough for all us that isn't too expensive. Dollar Car Rental offered some discounts on family vehicles from Rennes Airport and so we took advantage of it and took the bus down and picked up this cute car!
On the top of our list of places to visit in France was Normandy. We really wanted to visit some of the famous sights from WWII. Its over 2 hours away and so we left early Saturday morning and drove northeast to get there. When I say early in Cannegieter terms: that means around 10am-ish.
First views of the coastlines:
We first stopped at the Canadian Memorial Center at Juno Beach and walked around.
We decided to not visit the musuem because it wasn't free and everybody was happy just exploring around outside.
We then headed towards the Utah and Omaha Beaches.
The highlight of the trip was definitely visiting the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial.
They have a fabulous museum that we loved walking around and reading so many interesting facts about the war.
They had a few films playing that the kids enjoyed watching.
As you are walking out of the museum towards the cemetery, there are many pictures of American servicemen/women on the walls with details of their lives and how they had been killed in action. Also, the names of those who died during D-day are read over a speaker.
I am so glad those Americans who lost their lives overseas will never be forgotten.
Even though it was cold and windy, we still tried to walk around and read as many names as we could in the cemetery.
I hope we can go back and visit another time on a sunny day. It was definitely worth the trip!
