When doing some research on the area, Jeff learned about the marble mines in Carrara. He decided to take us on a detour on our way home from Cetona to see them.
It was an amazing drive! It had some nice switchbacks as we climbed in elevation. Somehow we ended up on a narrow road - luckily we only had a couple vehicles pass the other direction and we were on the mountain side of the road. Not quite as exciting as this clip that was filmed in Carrara:
We loved seeing the marble. It was hard to take in the enormous scale of it all because at first it almost looks like snow up on the top of the mountains but as you get closer you start to see the mining equipment and can start putting it all in perspective.

We saw several of the exterior quarry mines. There was one area where we pulled off and were able to see into one of the mine openings but we must not have taken any pictures.
Driving along this one lane road we found ourselves going through these fun tunnels.
All in all it made for an interesting and adventurous visit!
