We found the Dinan of the French Riviera! After a long touring day on Saturday, we decided to visit just one place today and we discovered the medieval village of Haut-de-Cagnes
We took the train to Cagnes-Sur-Mer (after being delayed in Nice for awhile) Sunday afternoon and followed the signs to Haut-de-Cagnes.
We hadn't walked up a steep hill since our Dinan days and so Scott had Kathryn pretended she was a rock climber to help her get motivated to walk up the hill. He always makes everything fun for her.
Once we made it up the hill, we loved walking through the little streets and alley ways and trying to find our way to the Grimaldi Castle Museum.
We made it!
The Grimaldi Castle Museum was a great find! It only cost us 8 euros to visit.
It was built in the 1300's by Rainier Grimaldi, the Lord of Cagnes, as a fort to protect the town from outside attacks.
Once we entered the musuem, we made our way up to the top floor to visit the top of the museum outside.
A beautiful view was our reward after climbing many stairs!
In the 1600's, Jean-Henri Grimaldi, transformed it into more of a palace.
It was then purchased in the 1940's by the township and made a museum.
The second floor had a few different art collections on display.
The first floor hosts an impressive olive tree museum.
Once we exited the museum and we learned of a free shuttle that would take us back into Cagnes-sur-Mer
It was quite a ride down the little streets!
From here it was only a 1K walk to the train station.
Kathryn found some roly-polys to entertain her on the way back.
Haut-de-Cagnes is a Cannegieter approved place for anyone to visit while staying the French Riviera!
